Transit company currently lists the expected bus schedule on their website and posts it at each bus stop. Expected bus times are rarely accurate due to impacting factors like traffic, longer stops to assist passengers using wheelchairs or the sudden need to take a bus out of service for maintenance. Due to expansion, numerous bus routes have been recently added. Many of those routes stop at the same bus stop. Before the new routes were added, riders could simply rush to the stop when they saw a bus coming—but that does not work anymore because it might not be the bus that they're expecting. Riders find it confusing to figure out when the next bus will arrive at each stop and which bus route that will be. (At Washington & State; there are 7 different lines that make stops at that particular bus stop multiple times a day).
Target audience includes mainly those in low to middle class, ages ranging from 18-60 yrs. Many riders are on a strict time schedule, and need to get to their destination on time or have an accurate estimation of when the bus will arrive for pick up, as well as to their necessary stop. Many riders may be college students or work in the city. (Midwestern, Urban)
1. Ensure that any rider can tell when each of the 7 bus lines arrive at the Washington & State stop and how much time they have to get there before their desired bus arrives at that stop.
2. Allow riders to select 1 of 7 bus lines to see a list of its future arrival times at the Washington & State bus stop.
3. Allow riders to add chosen bus routes and lines to a Favorites list.
4. Allow riders to view delays and maintenances happening on their Favorited bus routes and lines.
Survey results confirm expectancy of majority riders being 18-30 years of age.
All riders experienced their buses being late occasionally or sometimes.
75% of survey participants reported Notifications of delays, arrival times, fastest routes, etc. as being a feature they would like to see incorporated into new bus app.
4 Participants completed 5 tasks in a set scenario while being observed virtually.
Imagine you are a college student attending your local university. You live in a metropolitan area so it’s difficult to find parking and relying on Uber everyday is just too expensive. You notice there is a bus stop close by your new apartment and wonder how long it would take to get to your school campus. You decide to give it a shot and come across the Get Around app when searching for transportation apps.
Task 1 - Create an account and Login to your new app Get Around. (You do not need to enter any name/email/password data).
Task 2 - Share your location and search your school address (1415 S State St.)
You hop on the bus and all seems to be going smoothly until you exit at Washington & State! This is such a busy station and there are so many buses coming and going.
Task 3 - Find out when your correct transfer bus is set to arrive at the Washington & State station. It’s 12:03PM, how much time do you have to wait at this bus stop for your next bus to arrive?
As you are waiting, you start to wonder where you would have ended up if you had missed your transfer station and didn’t exit at Washington & State or if you missed your first bus bringing you to this busy station.
Task 4 - What other future times would Route 301 arrive at Washington & State station.
Task 5 - Favorite Bus line 301.
Positive Findings:
+ 100% of participants commented on pleasing aesthetic of app.
+ All participants used search bar immediately.
+ All participants were able to recognize symbol and locate Home screen from any page.
+ Participants agreed Map view was convenient and easily understood.
Adjustments Needed:
- Favorites menu appeared difficult to comprehend/ navigate.
- Share location aspect difficult to find.
- Participants went straight to search bar without clicking on the map.
- May consider buttons to Stations list or Routes list for more convenient navigation.
- Map route visual update/ change necessary due to functionality and aesthetic.
